Traditional asphalt-saturated underlayment (#15/#30). Largely superseded by synthetic underlayment, which is lighter and tear-resistant.

  • Synthetic Underlayment

    A woven polymer underlayment — lighter, stronger, and more slip- and tear-resistant than felt; the modern standard.

  • Underlayment (Roof)

    The water-resistant layer between deck and shingles — felt or synthetic — that backstops the roof covering.

  • Field Shingles

    The main shingles covering the broad roof area, as distinct from starter, hip, and ridge-cap shingles.

  • Fascia

    The board at the eave covering rafter tails and carrying the gutter. Rot here is usually a sign of gutter or drip-edge failure.

  • Gable

    The triangular wall section under the ends of a pitched roof; a gable roof is the classic two-slope form.
